The annual firewood charity supply of the Shirak Center has become a real rescue for socially insecure families in Gyumri and adjacent rural communities. Hundreds of families who survive without any kind of household and hygienic basic conditions are unemployed; the only means of living are social benefits, disability pensions, or pensions that are not enough for food. In winter, many families seek for fuel from garbage bins. They burn everything they could find - plastic bottles, paper, old clothes and shoes, tires, which can cause suffocation because of the smoke in winter. In order to provide those families with a little warmth in their shelters, Shirak Center initiated fuel distribution in winter called Charity Handbook "10,000 Sacks of Firewood for the Needy and Homeless Families".
