UNEMPLOYMENT RISING DAY AFTER DAY

Economy

“Unemployment is more aimed at women in Armenia,” told “A1” during an interview today Head of the “State Employment Agency” Sona Harutyunyan and explained that there are less men registered for employment.

Whereas unemployed women made up 75 percent in 2008, this January that number reduced to 73 percent “in favor of” the rise of unemployed men.

The agency conducts analyses by updating necessary information by the hour on a day-to-day basis. Thus, as of February 1, there are 92,400 people seeking jobs of which 75,700 have the status of unemployed. All these people state that they prefer jobs that require their professional skills with high salaries.

The majority of unemployed include engineers, teachers, nurses and drivers. It should be mentioned that there is demand in one region and no demand in another. Drivers, locksmiths, turners, milling-machine operators, sewer workers and welders are in high demand in Yerevan.

According to head of the employment agency, the number of job seekers goes down during the months of winter and starts going up only after March and April. But this year the number of job seekers has already gone up, including the number of people receiving unemployment benefits.

Based on the agency’s statistics, a number of enterprises have fired 1506 workers for different reasons, 2,283 people were laid-off and another 1382 people are on pension.

People working in the mining industry and the scientific-technical field have been laid-off. For example, 969 people were laid-off in the Syunik region of which 550 were working in the copper-molybdenum factory of Agarak.

The number of people seeking jobs at the “State Employment Agency” has gone up on the account of people who have left abroad in search of jobs. According to Mrs. Harutyunyan, all 12 state projects for employment are underway and according to results, 476 people are employed, while 480 unemployed are enlisted in the professional instruction programs.
