INTERNET PAGE THAT INSPIRES HOPE FOR JUSTICE

Social

Those who serve their punishment in detention facilities have been loosing any sense of humanity for the period of imprisonment, former detainee Ashot Bleyan says. “Haykakan Zhamanak” newspaper’s journalists have installed Internet page “SOS”, where detainees’ letters to journalists are to be placed. There will be also complaints about human rights abuses in the page.

“It is the first step to establish prisoners’ direct contact with community “, said those present at the page opening ceremony. Legal solutions to the problems raised will also be placed in the page. “SOS” is to be useful to the journalists, as they will be provided with update information about the facts of human rights violation and situation in Armenian jails.

The “Haykakan Zhamanak” Chief Editor expressed a hope that the page will contribute to reducing violence in Armenian prisons.

It is worth to be noted that the “SOS” initiators are too optimistic about the effect, as inmates’ contact with journalists has already existed while the situation in jails remains unchanged.

Nevertheless, let’s hope that their optimism will be rewarded.
