CHILDREN REMAIN UNPROTECTED IN OUR SOCIETY
Support A1+!“A 90-year-old teacher of one of Yerevan’s schools has constantly been beating 12-year-old schoolchildren. The children are scared to complain about this even to their parents”, National Assembly juridical adviser Karine Halajyan said speaking at “Children Rights Protection Mechanisms” seminar held today by Armenian Foreign Ministry, the UN Children Foundation office and Children Rights International Bureau, Canada.
Despite the fact that Armenia has accepted international commitments related to children rights protection, “children remain most vulnerable group of our society”.
Children rights protection plan was has been included in Armenian government’s strategy on poverty reduction. “This is the first step in direction of fulfilling government commitments toward children”, UN Children Foundation representative Branislav Jeckich said.
Speaking on children rights protection issues, the seminar participants stressed that no problems can be solved in this area unless the republic reaches social security and material welfare.
Finnish children ombudsman Helana Molander was invited for the seminar to share her 20-year-long experience in this field with Armenians.
Children protection institution functions separately from human rights one in Finland. Either children or their parents can apply to this body.
Armenia is not so rich to afford children ombudsman and human rights protection law isn’t adopted yet, despite entering the CE, the republic accepted proper commitment, the seminar participants noted.
