By now there is no investigation information in Armenia about how the people connected with the criminal field understand so-called “alternative punishment”. There is also now information about the perspectives of effective application of types of alternative punishment.

In order to fill the gap the organization “Progressive Social Technologies” tried to find out the opinion of those responsible about alternative punishment. All this was summed up in a book «Application of Alternative Criminal Punishments in Armenia» the presentation of which took place today in hotel Congress.

According to the conclusion, the majority has a positive opinion about the types of alternative punishment. There’s also negative opinion. These are mainly those who do not agree with the novelties of the Criminal Code, thinking that they do not correspond to the Armenia mentality.

According to some people, the novelty can contribute to the development of corruption, with which Stefan Buchmeier, Human Rights responsible of the OSCE Yerevan office could not but agree. He thinks that although the program has some dangerous elements but he hopes that the officials will have a positive opinion about the application of alternative punishments.

Let us also add that today alternative punishments are fining and social forced work.
