DEATH-RATE DEPENDS ON INVESTMENTS?

“Worse than in Europe, better than in the CIS”, Deputy Minister of Health Hayk Darbinyan stated when commenting on children’s and maternal mortality in Armenia. In his words, in case investments are made the conditions will improve, since there are problems with training of the medical staff and equipping the laboratories in the regions.

14 cases of maternal mortality were fixed in Armenia in 2004. This year 3 women died when delivering a baby. According to head of the department of the health of mother and child of the RA Health Ministry Karine Saribekyan, mortality is caused by bleeding, infectious diseases, post-natal complications, abortion. In Armenia pregnant women sometimes die of tuberculosis or cancer. Sometimes doctors are to blame.

According to the data provided WHO, annually over half million women die in delivery.

To note, WHO regional representation jointly with the Minister of Health initiated a seminar on the topic to be held June 28-July1 with the participation of Armenia, Macedonia, Romania, Russia, Turkey and Turkmenistan.
