ESSAY COMPETITION FOR LAW STUDENTS
Support A1+!Yerevan (ICRC) – Today, the final round of the second open Essay Competition on International Humanitarian Law (IHL) for law students of Armenian universities is taking place at the conference hall of the Constitutional Court of Armenia.
The competition, jointly organized by the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) and the Armenian Association of International Law (AAIL), was launched in October 2005. Seven institutions of higher education - Yerevan State University, Armenian-Russian (Slavonic) State University, French University in Armenia, Armenian branch of Moscow New Legal Institute, Mants University, Acharyan University, Military Institute of the MoD and the Police Academy of Armenia participate in the event.
The aim of this competition is to promote a sound teaching and research tradition in the field of IHL and to encourage law students as future decision-makers to implement IHL in national legislation.
The proposed topics were "Certain Conventional Weapons and IHL" and "Criminal Sanctions for Illegitimate Conduct of Military Operations". Twenty four students submitted their works to the jury. The winner of the competition will participate in an ICRC organized IHL-related event abroad.
The first Essay Competition on IHL for law students was organized in Yerevan in 2003. The ICRC and AAIL intend to hold similar competitions in future as well.
