ALTERNATIVE WANTS FREEDOM SQUARE

Social

The members of Alternative Public-Political Initiative have come to the conclusion that Yerevan Municipality will never allow them to hold a rally in Freedom Square.

Nikol Pashinyan, member of the initiative, claims the reasons for refusal are numerous, “Freedom Square has a symbolic importance in Armenia. It will be easy to gather people and hold a second march there. In case we changed the venue of the rally, the municipality could have sent us to Freedom Square; they do their utmost to suppress the oppositional forces.”

To remind, the municipality forbade Alternative to hold a rally on March 26. Thus, the initiative applied to the court on March 30 to find out the reasons for rejection.

Under Clause 13 of the RA acting law on “Holding Meetings, Rallies and Marches,” the rejecting side must account for “the motives of forbidding mass rallies in the disputable territory.”

“Modern courts tend to breach laws. The municipality is beyond the law; it obeys the acting officialdom. The court was to make a final decision within 24 hours, but the judge Gajane Karakhanyan fixed the sitting on March 29 - 77 hours later.”

IMPERFECT SYSTEM WILL NOT IMROVE AFTER THE PRIME MINISTER’S DECEASE

Nikol Pashinyan assumes that there won’t be significant changes after the untimely decease of RA Prime Minister Andranik Margaryan,. “We shall counter aggravation of the political field. On the whole, the system has been imperfect before Andranik Margaryan’s death and it will remain as such later on,” Nikol Pashinyan says.

Vahagn Khachatryan, member of Alternative, agrees to Pashinyan’s opinion. He only excludes the further tension. “The authorities will act under a written scenario; personalities don’t matter. Nothing will change after Margaryan’s desease.”
