“DEMOCRACY IS A LUXURY FOR OUR TELEVISION”

Social

It is already six years since A1+ went off the air. Today we inquired from passers-by whether they feel a demand for free, independent and impartial information and what significance A1+ had for them.

“Today the notions like freedom and democracy are a luxury for our television. In this respect, A1+ is of great importance, necessary as the air we breathe.”

“Today's mess in Armenia is directly resulted by the lack of real TV Channels although there are 21 TV stations in Armenia, if I am not mistaken,” said 30-year-old translator Ruzanna.

She says in case Armenia had a few TV stations like A1+, the authorities wouldn't try their best to soothe the situation and people would be much quieter. “Today many people go to Northern Avenue and Liberty Square to learn something new. Very often you learn the latest news rather from your neighbours, friend and relatives than from news programmes. This is a real disgrace,” she says.

Philologist Mariam simply said, “It is enough! Return to the air!” She says a lot will change in the country, if A1+ returns to the air. Regarding plurality and objectiveness of today’s television, she said, “I think today’s media is in a ridiculous state, and everybody will agree with me.”

Editor Tigran Rshtuni says the director of A1+ Company, Mesrop Movsisyan, was able to open a free and professional TV channel. “Instead of promoting the TV station, they closed it down, let alone protection of human rights and freedom of speech.” Tigran Rshtuni says all Armenian TV channels are bound by some levers - economic, political, etc. Moreover, people seeking diversity of opinions, are subjected to political persecution.

Economist Tamara Poghosian says A1+ was a unique TV channel. “Unfortunately, it was closed down. TV channels have become uninteresting for the society. An atmosphere of fear is perceived in all of them. They simply imitate each other,” she says.

“A1+ was the only TV channel we used to watch with great interest. Today’s television is filled with lies and lacks impartial coverage,” said mechanical engineer Eteri Khachaturian.
