EVENTS OF MARCH 1: SHAME OF 2008

Social

Based on results of a survey taken by “A1+”, the majority of Armenian citizens will remember 2008 as the year of the events of March 1.

“Unfortunately, in 2008 Armenia experienced a tragedy that it shouldn’t have experienced. People were killed, the people were broken down and it was a great shame,” told “A1+” engineer Edward Manukyan. Citizens separated the presidential elections, the victories of Armenian athletes in Beijing and Dresden, as well as the performances of singers Sirusho and Monica Manucharov in “EuroVision” as the highlights of 2008. They considered the victims of March 1 and the imprisonment of people for their political views as the greatest tragedy.

“There were also many youth programs, international festivals and many events for most of us,” recalls student Sona Sedrakyan. Pensioner Lina Gyulbudaghyan placed emphasis on the changes seen in the relations between Armenia and Turkey.

As for the events that took place in the world, those surveyed marked the U.S. presidential elections, the Georgian-Osetian war and the global economic crisis.

“I think that the year 2008 will go down in history as the scandal connected to U.S. President George Bush when one of the journalists in Iraq threw shoes at the president,” told “A1+” student Maria Manukyan.
