DRIVERS CALL TO WAIT

Social

“We demand freezing the issue concerning the independent taxi service until the economic crisis ends because we can’t continue to work like this and pay taxes to the government and the bank for new cars,” said during a discussion today independent taxi driver Saghatel Movsisyan.

Movsisyan says that taxi drivers can’t put a meter, buy yellow license plates or keep an accountant because they don’t even earn 10,000 drams (30 dollars) a day.

What also irritates drivers is the fact that the taxi car must not be more than 10 years old by law.

“I take care of my car and drive very carefully. But taxi service drivers don’t really care about their cars because it doesn’t belong to them,” says driver Hakob Vardanyan.

Head of the NA “Heritage” faction Armen Martirosyan said that he fully understands the drivers because they take care of their cars better and their personal cars are better than the ones provided by the service. Martirosyan also noted that there should not be an age limit because the driver may also use the taxi to drive his relatives.

Deputy Head of the Transportation Inspectorate of the Ministry of Transportation and Communication Hayk Martirosyan said that there is serious progress in this field. The 200,000 dram tax has been reduced to 25,000 drams. But Martirosyan couldn’t say when the taxi drivers would be fined.

The drivers prepared a letter to Prime Minister Tigran Sargsyan stating that this should start when the crisis is over.
