The Monitoring Committee of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe will consider the suspension of Armenia’s voting right in its winter session.
The Monitoring Committee has announced that “in case the winter session notes no progress in view of people detained for their political viewpoints after the March 1-2 events in Yerevan, the voting right of the Armenian delegation at the Parliamentary Assembly will be suspended.”
Today A1+ tried to learn our citizens’ opinion about the PACE resolutions.
“I think they will not suspend Armenia’s voting right otherwise they won’t be able to pose demands to Armenia. I think Armenia’s leadership will be given deadline to implement the resolutions as was the case with Georgia. Our neighbours waged a war but their voting right wasn’t suspended in the result,” said physicist Khachatur Hakobyan.
“Let’s not hurry with our preconceived opinions. Those are empty talks. Our authorities have done their best to please the PACE. Why should the latter suspend our right?”
“I think Armenia will be severely punished. This is really disgraceful for us. Armenia will be defamed all over the world. The authorities should at least try to restore the country’s fame,” said nonpartisan Marat Mkhitaryan. “Armenia’s authorities can no longer be forgiven. They have already exceeded all limits. They openly ignore Europe and do whatever they want. Many innocent people are jailed today for their disapproval of the government’s policy. Can such a country be considered democratic?”
Note that only two out of the 15 respondents think Armenia has met all requirements; therefore it shouldn’t lose its voting right. The others say the authorities have sat idle, and the Monitoring Committee will either give Armenia time to “correct its mistakes” or suspend its voting right.
