The 25th Morelia – Linares-2008 chess tournament kicked off in Mexico with eight participants. These are the current World Champion GM Viswanathan Anand, the Ukranian top GM Vassily Ivanchuk, the ex World Champion GM Veselin Topalov, the Norwegian prodigy GM Magnus Carlsen, the Hungarian top star GM Peter Leko, the Azerbaijani young talent GM Teimour Radjabov, the Armenian number 1 GM Levon Aronian, and the World Cup finalist GM Alexei Shirov.

The Armenian GM lost to his Bulgarian contender Veselin Topalov at the first round. At the next 2nd and 3rd rounds Aronian beat World Champion Viswanathan Anand and tied with Azerbaijani Teimour Radjabov respectively.

Presently, Veselin Topalov heads the fixture list with 2.5 points. Anand is the second with 2 points. Aronian, Ivanchuk and Leko share the third place with 1.5 points each.
