Aronyan’s first defeat
Levon Aronyan's first defeat came during the super competition in Linares. This can play a decisive role for Levon because the Armenian grosmeister lost to one of the leading chess players Alexander Grishchuk.
Before this match of the 6th round Aronyan and Grishchuk were heading the table with 3.5 points respectively and scoring a victory meant the leading title for both sides. Aronyan played with the black figures, lost the match and moved down to third place, while Grishchuk became the only leading player with 4.5 points.
Norwegian Magnus Carlson won Vishvanatan Anand with the white figures. Winning the world champion, Carlson is at 2nd with 3.5 points.
Failed ending
The conventional "Aeroflot" competition in Moscow is over. Arman Pashikyan was defeated and lost the chance to hold a spot in the A1 group. Pashikyan placed 9th with 6 points. Gabriel Sargsyan played poorer and placed 14th with only 5.5 points.
Melikset Khachiyan from the U.S. made it to 2nd place with 7 points in the A2 group. Alexander Danin also scored that many points and exceeded Khachiyan.
Armenian chess players of the B group did not score any medals, while winner of the C group Aghasi Inants scored 7 points.
