Marriage rates go down
Marriage rates have gone down over the past couple of years, while divorce rates have gone up, according to investigator, candidate of economic sciences Hrant Harutyunyan.
According to the last census, the number of women exceeds that of men with a ratio of 47% to 53%. In other words, 12% of women can't get married with the opposite sex.
"The prevailing stereotype that women exceed men in number and that this has an impact on women's marriage is not true. The relativity of men and women reaches 40-60%," says Hrant Harutyunyan.
Taking a look at the difference in the number of single men and women, it turns out that single men aged 20-35 years old exceed women according to age groups. The number of single women is beginning to exceed that of men starting from age 35-39.
"If we also take into account the fact that Armenian Diasporan youth choose women from Armenia when it comes time to get married, the gravity of 35-year old men's desire to get married becomes clear," says Harutyunyan, adding that this demographic situation causes a blow to the conventional model of the "Armenian family".
"In this case, some women avoid the issue of the age difference and become single mothers, which also goes against "Armenian customs"," says Hrant Harutyunyan.
