Armenia's Ombudsman Armen Harutyunyan has addressed a letter to Yerevan Mayor Gagik Beglaryan expressing his concern over the construction in a Yerevan park.

"The construction of a coffee shop in Yerevan's Student Park has found deep resonance in mass media. On May 13, 2010, a group of NGOs requested me to interfere with the illegal construction threatening yet another green area in the capital.

According to some sources, under the guise of constructing a café, the Yerevan Municipality intends to erect new huge buildings in the area which has been closed for a month. Environmentalists say they are not allowed to enter the territory to see the progress of the construction work.

A youth action group called "We Are the Owners of Our City" has launched a collection of signatures against what it views as illegal construction. By Article 12 of the RA Law on Human Rights Defender, I request you to submit within ten days the decisions of the City Hall and copies of agreements validating the construction in Student Park located between National Library and Agrarian University," reads the letter.
