The grand pianos of Yerevan's "Sayat Nova" music school have been changed since the 1960s.

"Our children play musical instruments dating back to the 1960s and even 1940s. Recently two pianos were sent to the storehouse," director of the music school Tigran Hekekyan told A1+.

On the other hand, Mr. Hekekyan noted that the music school has instruments which cannot be found anywhere else in Armenia. For example, marimba which costs $ 15 000 was presented to the school.

Among the main problems of the music school Mr. Hekekyan underlined poor building conditions. Some lessons are taught at late hours due to the lack of classrooms.

Asked how he takes the criticism about the school's discipline, quality of education and staff, the director said, "Those who spread such rumours are probably unaware of the school. The school has had great progress since 1993. The gossips simply surpass all imagination."

Recently, Edward Topchyan, chief conductor and Art Director of the Armenian state philharmonic orchestra, criticized "Sayat Nova" music school in a press conference.

Tigran Hekekyan today said he does not avoid criticism though noted that "only ignorant people defame others."

"It is humiliating for someone heading the state philharmonic orchestra to make such irresponsible announcements," said Mr. Hekekyan. "Famous professors work in our school. Besides, our pupils are laureates of different international competitions and continue their studies in the conservatoire."
