During today's parliamentary hearings, the legislative body decided to leave the RA Law On Language unchanged.

"Our goal is to preserve our national identity, language and to avoid assimilation. On the other hand, we aim to expand international cooperation, ensure exchange of experience and be flexible and competitive in the field of education," NA Speaker Hovik Abrahamyan said in his addressing speech.

Mr. Abrahamyan informed his fellow colleagues that the draft amendments passed in the first reading had been thoroughly discussed with President Serzh Sargsyan and Coalition parties.

Minister of Education and Science Armen Ashotyan answered all questions concerning the preservation of national identity and Armenian language.

Members of "We are against the reopening of foreign-language schools" movement said it is necessary to study foreign languages, but not at the cost of the mother tongue.

"In order to be competitive we need not sacrifice our language and open foreign-language school. We simply need to have a competitive spirit and competitive knowledge. With the foreign-language schools Armenia will not be worth a farthing," said movement member Garegin Chukaszyan.
