Cancer that smothers nature

Social

Armenian shrines have turned into a place for eating and drinking, say members of the "Defenders of the natural-historical environment of Armenia" initiating group.

According to them, it is suffice to visit the Monastery of Havuts Tar to see the real image of today's Armenian society. According to member of the initiating group Vahagn Piliposyan, there were half-empty bottles, plastic plates, dirty cups, barbecue meat, ashes spread around the church. "Based on my experience, I can say that the people responsible for that are mainly the locals from Goght and Garni villages. They visit the monastery every fall and commit vandalism," said Piliposyan.

Rocks are missing in Garni and are mainly used for building villas. In addition, the area has turned into a junkyard.

Environmentalists also say that the historical-cultural monuments at Khosrov Reserve are in the same situation.

"Today we condemn our neighboring countries for destroying Armenian cross-stones in Jugha, but we are turning those monuments into a stack of stones," says architect Garegin Knyazyan. He calls on all departments and oligarchs to care and take steps to save the monuments.

According to the participants of today's press conference, the government's indifference has reached the point where the 200 acres of land in the heart of Khosrov Reserve has been given to a construction firm for a 60-year period.

Environmentalist Mariam Sukhudyan compares this to a type of cancer that tends to grow, develop and is aimed toward Kakavaberd, which is a good place for poachers."

Environmentalists warn the corresponding bodies that if the government continues to stay silent, they will address international organizations. Writer, publicist Vahram Tatikyan announced that he will demand that Armenia be considered as an unfavorable country for tourism.
