Will Lake Sevan become a swamp?
The global climate changes are of scientific, political and economic significance, said participants of the event "Fair for ideas dedicated to environmental protection and climate change" held at the National Academy of Sciences today.
Participating in the event were nearly 90 academics from Armenia, Belgium, Germany, Ireland, Italy and more. In his speech, academic-secretary of the division of natural sciences at the RA National Academy of Sciences Vilen Hakobyan stated that based on the particularity of Armenia's geopolitical position, Armenia needs to develop a concept on biological security.
He also told "A1+" that the global climate changes have already had their impact on Armenia's nature, especially Lake Sevan. "Nearly 500 homes must be removed from the nearby territory. God forbid that the water starts getting swamped. If the water near the coast turns into a swamp, Lake Sevan will start becoming a swamp in its entirety and Armenia will be on the brink of a natural disaster," said the academic.
The scientist also expressed concern over the grave situation in Yerevan. "Constructing so many buildings in the center of the city is a crime and the Northern Avenue is a case in point. They lie when they say that Tamanyan's plan included that. No, Tamanyan couldn't have had such a plan," he said in closing.
Environmentalist Inga Zarafyan told "A1+" that although she is pleased to see scientists at the event, this is a big political process and she didn't see any representatives of political parties or state structures, besides the Ministry of Nature Protection.
She also listed the environmental risks in Armenia that are more dangerous in the panorama of global climate changes, including loss of water and forest resources and soil erosion. "If we lose those three resources, there will be more diseases and decline of agriculture," said the environmentalist.
