Zaruhi Postanjyan wasn’t on the guest list
The "Against Uranium Exploitation" non-governmental initiative is not getting ready to give up. It will organize new actions to protect the nature and prevent ecological disasters in Armenia.
The environmentalists are planning to hold a concert-rally in Yerevan on October 23 at 5 p.m.
"We know what kinds of people and decisions we will be fighting against, but I don't think we're alone in this struggle. We believe that the exploitation of uranium is directly against Armenia," said "Heritage" faction MP Zaruhi Postanjyan who is also a member of the initiating group.
The action against the exploitation of uranium in Syunik was supposed to be held on October 16, that is, the opening of the tramway in Tatev. However, according to Zaruhi Postanjyan, residents of a number of villages were threatened and prohibited from participating in the action.
"I have received many alarms from residents. I have talked to the people making threats as well," said Zaruhi Postanjyan.
Postanjyan said she wasn't able to do her job on that day either. "I was even ready to hold the action by myself, but Serzh Sargsyan's security service officials didn't let me enter and said that I was not on the guest list," said Zaruhi Postanjyan.
According to the oppositional MP, such steps are conditioned by the government's concerns.
"The president, better yet, that illegitimate person showed that he is afraid. He faces people's revolts wherever he goes," said Zaruhi Postanjyan.
The "Against Uranium Exploitation" initiative was forced to send a demand to the administration of the Tatev Revival Project. They believe that supporting the termination of investigation and exploitation of uranium in Syunik is in the interests of the organization.
Executive Director of the National Competitiveness Foundation of Armenia Bekor Papazyan told "A1+" that the Foundation had received the environmentalists' letter.
"I am not informed about the project, but the Foundation is deeply concerned about the ecological security in Syunik, especially in terms of tourism. I have talked to representatives of the group and we had an interesting discussion," said Papazyan.
The "Against Uranium Exploitation" non-governmental initiative is concerned that the exploitation of the uranium mine will harm people's health, the development of tourism in Armenia and will turn Syunik into another target for emigration.
