Georgy Vanyan: “My life is periled”
Chairman of the Caucasus Center of Peacekeeping Initiatives Georgy Vanyan says his life is periled. He regularly receives anonymous calls with a demand to stop his public activity.
"The last call I received was at 1:30 a.m., December 1. Before that, they threatened to annihilate my family," he said.
Vanyan links the threats with his activity, specifically with the organization of Azerbaijani film festivals in Armenia. The last screening of Azerbaijani films was canceled in November since Armenian halls refused to host the festival for different reasons.
According to Georgy Vanyan, the threats are mainly uttered in social networking sites, blogs and Facebook. As a result, regional partners fear to work with him while local media avoid covering his activity.
On November 12 Vanyan requested the Kentron district police department to guarantee the safety of festival participants.
"They cynically advised me to hire bodyguards," said Vanyan.
He is convinced that a "patriotic" tribunal has been formed against him, which decided to suspend his activities in Armenia.
