Twenty-two years ago this day 40% of Armenia's territory turned into a disaster zone in an instant.

According to official data, the earthquake took the lives of 25,000 people. The force of the 1988 earthquake at the epicenter, which included Spitak city and its surrounding 12 villages, was 10 and the main shock magnitude was 7. The earthquake destroyed 363 residencies, including 21 cities and 342 villages and left 514,000 people homeless. The earthquake of 7 December 1988 completely destroyed 17% of the country's housing fund.

Twenty-two years have passed, but the traces of the earthquake in Spitak can still be seen, the scars look better and proof of that are the structures that were destroyed and have not been renovated ever since.
