Diabetics are getting younger
The number of young diabetics is rapidly increasing in Armenia.
"The rhythm of life has changed. If we compare our lifestyle with that of our parents and grandparents, we shall see a great difference," said endocrinologist Bamine Baghramyan, Deputy Director of the Yerevan Medical Center.
According to her, the main cause of the disease is the incorrect way of life.
The tense working regime and sedentary lifestyle can lead to various diseases, including diabetes.
"Diabetes mellitus is typically associated with presence of various degrees of obesity. About 90% of those who suffer with obesity acquire diabetes sooner or later," says endocrinologist Susanna Alexanian.
Diabetes cannot be cured, but it can be prevented and controlled by taking some simple measures.
"The best thing to do is to preserve the norms, avoid unhealthy lifestyle and keep a strict diet," says Bamine Baghramyan.
Several factors can trigger diabetes: bad eating habits, a sedentary lifestyle, and most importantly, stress. Unless you don't target these factors and change them, diabetes cannot be prevented. Moreover, some people are naturally prone to developing diabetes because it is in the genes, while some others are not. Whether or not you are prone to it, you ought to know the kind of effects it has on the body, so that these effects can be controlled, and do not manifest themselves into more serious conditions.
There are two types of diabetes: insulin dependent diabetes (Type 2) and non-insulin dependent diabetes (Type 1).
Type 2 diabetes may occur due to increasing age, obesity and physical inactivity.
Meanwhile, Type 1 diabetes may develop when the cells in the pancreas that makes insulin are destroyed, causing a severe lack of insulin. This is thought to be the result of the body attacking and destroying its own cells in the pancreas - known as an autoimmune reaction.
Diabetes could cause blindness, kidney failure, stroke, heart attack, wounds that would not heal and impotency.
