It is already four years underage Mariam, a resident of the Nagorno Karabakh Republic, has lived in Yerevan. In 2007, the six-year-old girl was transferred to a special school for children with hearing problems. Mariam sees her family members during the holidays.

About 170 children study in the school, with 100 of them staying overnight. After classes the children are taught carpet making, shoe making, dress making, tapestry and design.

The school is unique in Armenia in the sense that it organizes professional education for children with hearing problems. We teach children special skills and knowledge which they can apply later in their work," said Headmaster Ashot Avetisyan.

The first and foremost problem the school faces today is heating.

"It is the second year we are trying to raise money from charity funds but to no avail. Today classes are conducted in the dormitory," said the headmaster.

In 2007, the canteen of the state-run school was renovated with the assistance of the Maltese embassy. It was furnished by the Japanese embassy.
