An old-fashioned gramophone was playing a forgotten love song to attract the attention of potential buyers.

As every weekend, Vernissage, a celebrated open-air market in the Armenian capital, was overcrowded on March 12.

Mrs. Victoria, who sells china sets and glasses souvenirs, says few visit Vernissage to buy things. The market revives during the summer months with the influx of tourists.

"Well-off people do not buy things in Vernissage, they go to special stores. Our regular customers are collectors, pensioners and tourists who buy a couple of flags and souvenirs made of pomegranate," she said.

Dusty souvenirs, that no longer interest former owners, are put up for sale in Vernissage.

Mrs. Victoria says they buy goods from people who intend to leave the country or have no money to buy bread.
"If you have nothing to live on, why should you need a plate or cup?" she said.

Marketers of the capital's largest open-air market are people of different professions.
