A group of experts from the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) will arrive in Yerevan to observe and evaluate the level of safety of the Metsamor-based Nuclear Power Plant.

At a news conference on Wednesday, the head of the State Nuclear Safety Regulatory Committee at the Armenian Government, Ashot Martirosyan, said that the government is taking measures to raise the safety level of the nuclear plant and the Plant has no technical problems today.

Speaking about the demands of Armenia's neighbours to suspend the operation of the plant as it poses a major threat for the environment, Martirosyan said no country has the right to demand another country to close down its nuclear power plant.

As reported earlier, Azerbaijan urged the international community to support the closure of the Armenian Nuclear Power Plant.

Martirosyan said that after the Fukushima nuclear blast, draft plan was developed that proposes EU member states to undergo a nuclear safety test. Further, he recalled that the situation in the the nuclear plant was alarming in 1982 when a fire broke out in one of the blocs but Armenian specialists were able to tackle the problem in the best possible way.

Martirosyan also assured reporters that the yellow dust observed in Yerevan and suburbs has nothing to do with the nuclear power plant.
