All the museums in Armenia will be open to public from May 14 to 18, providing people with an opportunity to visit museums free of charge.

On May 14, sixty museums will be open to visitors from 6 p.m. till midnight as part of "European Museum Night" action organized under the auspices of the Council of Europe and UNESCO.

The event takes place every year in the middle of May, when museum doors open free of charge and people flock to see and participate in the many cultural activities and spectacles put on for the delight of all.

It all began in 1999 when France decided to open up all its museums to the public on a weekend day in May. It immediately caught on and was extended to all the museums in the 39 signatory countries to the Cultural Convention of the Council of Europe in 2001.

Armenia joined the Convention in 2005 and has been joining the Museum Night for seven years in a row.
"We are glad to see more people visiting museums with every passing year. The number of museum participating in the action also increases year by year," Minister of Culture Hasmik Poghosyan told a news conference on May 13.

The museums will offer a unique program to visitors. Pleasant surprises are awaiting the most active visitors.

This year the event will be held under the slogan "Written Memory" and will be dedicated to the written heritage and the 500th anniversary of Armenian printing.
