Every 10 seconds two people develop diabetes and one person dies from diabetes-related causes, according to the International Diabetes Federation (IDF).

On June 10-12, Armenia hosted the ninth conference of IDF member associations which aimed to raise awareness on diabetes and its prevention.

Professor Alexander Moyorov, a board member of the International Diabetes Federation European region (IDF -Europe), says it is highly important that people fight against the disease.

Though this is an incurable disease, people diagnosed with diabetes can live long and healthy if they lead a healthy lifestyle.

Over a billion people worldwide are now overweight and 300 million are clinically obese. People who are overweight have a higher risk of developing serious health problems in later life, including heart disease, diabetes, stroke, type 2 diabetes, bowel cancer, and high blood pressure. Most people put on excess weight because their lifestyles include an unhealthy diet and a lack of physical activity.

Diabetes is largely a hereditary disease with the inheritance being stronger in Type 2 diabetes. Anyway, patients should be under the supervision and constant care of doctors.

According to the IDF, 183900 people suffer from diabetes in Armenia, while the Ministry of Health says that the number of registered patients does not exceed 50 000.
