50% of Armenians want to leave their homeland
Our compatriots feel alienated in their own country. Their rights are violated every minute, ethnographer Hranush Kharatyan told a press conference on July 1.
"Similar programs open door for decent life in a poor and corrupt country like Armenia where citizens' rights are violated at every step," the ethnographer said while commenting on Russian program "Assistance to Compatriots."
Levon Ananian, the Chairman of the Writers' Union of Armenia, expressed concern over the situation in frontier villages. After the Artsakh war Azerbaijan gave its villages the title of a hero in order to raise their morale while in Armenia border villages are emptying with each passing day.
"About 100 young people recently left their village [I do not want to name the village] and went to work in Russia. Tomorrow their families will leave for Russia to join them," he said.
Environmentalist Karine Danielyan noted that about 50 percent of Armenian residents seek to leave Armenia in search of better living conditions. The figures were achieved during the recent sociological survey.
Commenting on the premier's statement on migration, the environmentalist said that the problem requires serious study and analysis and needn't be turned into a joke.
A group of public figures and intellectuals has addressed a letter to parliament speaker and prime minister, voicing their concerns about the grave psychological and socio-economic situation in the country as well as the ensuing migration.
They urge the officials to start serious discussions on the escalating migration and take drastic measures to combat the phenomenon.
