A passenger plane crashed into a dense forest Friday as it was trying to land during a rainstorm in the Democratic Republic of Congo, killing 127 people on board, Reuters said citing the Congolese transport ministry.

The Boeing-727 owned Ewa Bora Airways crashed more than 200 meters away from the runway.

The company said there had been 110 people on board the plane, while the Congolese transport ministry said there were 178 passengers on the plane. There were 51 survivors.

Rescuers are still working at the scene. According to preliminary data, the crash was due to unfavourable weather. Representatives of Hewa Bora confirmed the information saying the pilot was unable to land on the runaway in the storm and crashed the tropical rainforest.

Hewa Bora, which has eight ailiners, is blacklisted in European airspace and is banned from flying in the EU.
