“What does the Catholicos have to do with it?”
The "We Won't Stay Silent" youth initiative today touched upon the current state of the Sanahin monastic complex once again. The holy place is on the verge of collapse. The bushes and trees that have grown on the roofs of the monasteries and cathedrals remind one of a forest. Fifteen months ago, the RA Prime Minister had pledged that the Sanahin monastic complex, which has been registered in the UNESCO World Heritage List since 1996, would be saved.
Today's statement comes after President of the Organization Studying Armenia Monuments, historian Samvel Karapetyan proposed to the Catholicos of All Armenians to use at least a part of sums for the construction of new churches to solve the issue of Sanahin. In response, the Catholicos said he had nothing to do with the monasteries and churches located in the mountains.
The "We Won't Stay Silent" youth initiative "regrets not as much for the tragic state of the Sanahin monastic complex as much as the conscience of who it entrusted."
"What does the Catholicos have to do with the centuries-old churches that have been included in UNESCO's list of World Cultural Heritage? The Catholicos only deals with the future residence to be built in central Yerevan. The servants of the church should not be surprised by the humiliating reputation of their leader and shouldn't complain about sects since they are the ones ready to prepare grounds for their flourishing. The response to the salvation of Sanahin is brilliant evidence of that," as stated in the statement.
