YSU lecturer murdered in her apartment

Armine Hovvyan, a professor of Yerevan State University, was murdered in her apartment in downtown Yerevan on Saturday.

At around 5 p.m., September 17, the Central police department received information on fire at apt. 14/25 at Nalbandyan street.

According to initial information, Hovvyan was suffocated to death. On arriving at the scene, the police found 43-year-old Karen Petrosyan in Hovvyan's apartment who was taken to hospital.
The police found out that Petrosyan was an acquaintance of Hovvyan and had earlier been in the apartment several times.

On September 17, Petrosyan arrived at Hovvyan's apartment on some business. A little later, he struck the woman with a hammer and seized her money in the amount of AMD 40,000 and gold jewelry. To cover up the traces of murder, he set the flat on fire but was unable to get out of the burning apartment.

After being taken to hospital, Karen Petrosyan tried to flee. But policemen detained him at the intersection of Margaryan and Halabyan streets. The money and the jewelry were confiscated.

A criminal case has been filed under Articles 104 (murder), 175 (robbery) and 185 (intentional destruction or damage to property) of the Armenian Criminal Code.
An investigation is in progress.
