Government won’t retreat, HES will be constructed
RA Minister of Nature Protection Aram Harutyunyan today told environmentalists gathered near the government building that the government wouldn't retreat and that the construction of the hydro-electric station near Trchkan Waterfall was in progress.
"The construction firm has gone through all the procedures prescribed by the law starting in 2004," Aram Harutyunyan said.
Environmentalists say the documents for construction of the hydro-electric station raise concerns. According to them, there will be a lack of water and the waterfall will no longer be a natural monument.
"The law prescribes that all direct and indirect influences on that monument must be assessed when anyone does business in that area," member of "Let's Preserve Trchkan Waterfall" public-political initiative Levon Galstyan announced.
In his turn, the Minister of Nature Protection said there wouldn't be any reduction of water and pledged that the human factor would be ruled out when the hydro-electric station functioned.
The environmentalists will hold a discussion on Trchkan Waterfall with experts from the ministry. During a government session, the minister said the discussion is scheduled for next week.
