Forty percent of Armenia turned into a disaster zone on December 7, 1988, after a disastrous earthquake rocked Armenia, claiming more than 25,000 lives.

The earthquake of magnitude 10 or larger struck the country's northern and northeastern regions at 11:41 am, ruining the cities of Spitak, Leninakan, Kirovakan and Stepanavan. Totally, 21 towns and regional centers and 342 villages suffered damage from the devastating earthquake.

Today, 23 years after the Spitak earthquake, the wound has not yet cicatrized and it cannot cicatrize as long as dozens of families remain homeless and destinies are destroyed from the mental pains caused by the earthquake.

Thousands of people will continue to remember the black chapter of December 7, 1988 as long as they look at the hanging photos of their relatives, innocent victims of the earthquake.
