The Coalition to Stop Violence against Women today held a protest outside the General Prosecutor's Office in Yerevan, demanding a fair trial in the case of Mariam Gevorgyan who was brutally beaten and tortured by her husband David Ziroyan, and mother-in-law Haykanush Mikaelyan.

Mariam Gevorgyan, David's second wife, was among the protesters who demanded to punish David Ziroyan for abusing his wives.

"I want them to answer for their mistreatment. David told me openly that he bribed everyone and was ready to do everything to free his mother too. I do not know what to expect from courts," Mariam said, restraining her tears.

Demonstrators delivered a letter addressed to General Prosecutor Aghvan Hovsepyan demanding to monitor the investigation process with ultimate vigilance.

Mariam and David married in 2009, then they left for St. Petersburg, where David's family lived. There, Mariam was repeatedly abused by her husband and his family members.

Spokesperson for the General Prosecutor's Office Sona Truzyan informed A1+ that Deputy General Prosecutor Armen Danileyan today received Mariam Gevorgyan and promised to consider all details during the investigation.

Mariam's mother-in-law, Haykanush Mikaelyan, who was detained by law-enforcement bodies in Russia, will be transferred to Yerevan later in the day.
