Anti-Armenian demonstrations in France
Since this morning, thousands of Turks have been holding a protest in front of the French Senate, which is currently discussing the draft law criminalizing those denying the Armenian Genocide perpetrated by Ottoman Turkey in 1915.
French presses report that the debates are very active and that both pro-government and oppositionist parties are voting for the draft law. The presses predict that the draft law will be passed.
According to presses, the Socialists are the most active. The speakers declare that the adoption of the draft law will be prestigious for France, that is, the country defending human rights, as well as the people. The speakers defending the draft law have declared that not adopting the draft law would mean killing the victims of the genocide twice.
The Senators have appealed to Turkey with calls to recognize the past in order to build the future.
Among speakers was Armenian deputy of the Senate Patrick Devejian, who was welcomed with rounds of applause.
Touching upon the Turkish community's protest organized in front of the Senate, he declared that Turkey itself recognized the genocide through trials in 1919 and condemnations of the Armenian massacres, but now it is showing an anti-Armenian approach and is contradicting itself.
Devejian declared that yesterday the Turkish government organized the printing of anti-Armenian articles in two huge French newspapers, which goes to show that Turkey has an influence on France and the intention to distort the history.
The Armenian deputy also touched upon Hrant Dink's assassination and mentioned that that shameful incident also proved that Turkey not only continues to deny the historical truth, but is also implementing an anti-Armenian policy.
