Javakhk to renovate St. Nshan Church
The Russia-based "Diaspora in Javakhk" non-governmental organization has expressed the commitment to cover the expenses for renovation of the St. Nshan Church in Tbilisi.
Citing its "reliable sources", "Yerkramas" newspaper writes that "out of the 29 Armenian churches that were active in Tbilisi in the late 19th century, there are only two left today. Eight Armenian churches have been appropriated and have turned into Georgian churches. The reliefs, cross-stones, manuscripts and all Armenian elements have been eradicated, as stated in the message.
One of the two standing churches in Tbilisi is the St. Nshan Church, which was built by father and son Amira and Aslamaz Beibutyan in 1701.
In 2002, a fire broke out at the church, and the reasons remained unclear. A couple of months ago, another fire broke out in the church, and the cracks that appeared in the wall after the fire was put out became a reason for the collapse of the church's wall.
The non-governmental organization now sounds the alarm that the floor of St. Nshan Church has cracked and the land under the building is flowing.
