Inmate start hunger strike at penitentiary

Ashot Shahzadyan, an inmate at the Nubarashen penitentiary institution, started a hunger strike five days ago, demanding to review his criminal case.

The 23-year-old young man is accused of rape and murder and faces up to 20 years in prison.

Gor Ghlechyan, spokesperson for the Penitentiary Department at the Ministry of Justice, confirmed the information, saying Shahzadyan has been taken to a separate cell where is under the supervision of doctors.

Ashot Shahzadyan is accused of murdering 58-year-old Gayane Asoyan, a resident of Ayntap village in Ararat marz, on May 26, 2011. According to preliminary investigation, the woman was brutally beaten to death; traces of violence were found on the body.

Shahzadyan has not pled guilty to any crime.
