How do we eat? What is the percentage of dangerous substances in the food that we eat? Nobody knows the answers to these questions.

The data of the Ministry of Agriculture are age-old. According to old data, there used to be 11 quarantines for pests in Armenia. The image has changed, and the representatives say this is troubling.

Head of the State Food Safety Service Abraam Bakhchagulyan assures that the ministry will conduct new studies "to understand what kinds of quarantine pests there are in Armenia".

Since the issue is urgent, Armenia has organized a seminar with the participation of representatives of CIS countries to get a picture of the botanical-sanitary state in Armenia and reveal the ways of eliminating the dangerous organisms.

Bakhchagulyan mentioned that the ministry is already in the process of registering the physical and legal persons who have something to do with the production, maintenance, reprocessing or export of products originating from plants.

"This registration will allow us to have the base that will help control diseases," Bakhchagulyan said. Experts are rest assured that diseases are what contribute to low quality and serve as a reason for the decline of harvest. They say climatic conditions are secondary in this case.

"You won't find high-quality pears in Armenia's markets. There is a pest that hurts the plant, but there has not been any struggle. We have to understand what kinds of pests there are and assess the risks," Bakhchagulyan mentioned.
