Ara Yernjakyan meets activists
Ara Yernjakyan, a representative of the Yerevan Municipality and member of the Elders' Council, today visited Mashtots Avenue to meet environmental activists who have been holding a protest there for seven days now.
The activists are protesting against the construction of commercial kiosks in one of the capital's few remaining green spaces.
A1+'s correspondent reports from the ground that Yernjakyan tried to persuade the group to leave the site and allow constrictors to continue their work. However, the proposal received resistance by the environmentalists who are determined to prevent the illegal construction.
The group has initiated collection of signature but passers-by are afraid to join the move since the area is chained by numerous policemen who exceed the activists.
"Shame on you Ara. Go away!" the activists are chanting.
The police have banned the group from making a fire and heating themselves. A few steps away, the constructors have lit a fire near a tree damaging its trunk.
Earlier in the day, two activists lay in front of a concrete-mixing transport truck, banning its further move.
