Reading books and remembering victims at Mashtots Park
Armenian youth opened a unique "bookstore" at Mashtots Park today.
The organizers said people could receive books for free and donate books to others.
With this action, the owners of the bookstore, Nora and Taguhi, are expressing their attitude to the government's indirect taxing of books, which has doubled the price of books and has reduced the number of people buying books.
Film director Tigran Khzmalyan today told the activists about these days in 1988 when the youth disciplined with the spirit of Soviet internationalism and fighting for the freedom of Artsakh were receiving news about the massacres in Sumgait.
"Our generation turned into a generation of Armenians 24 years ago that day. It was a generation for which British rock n' roll, French literature or Italian cinema were more important than national values," said Tigran Khzmalyan.
The director mentioned that the youth of that time tried to find the solution to the issue outside of politics, that is, through the citizens' struggle, and the answer was Sumgait.
According to Tigran Khzmalyan, today, Armenian society is still facing the "same people involved in conspiracies and responding to the just demands at Teghut and Mashtots Park with the same brutal measures".
Today, several Armenian youth marched to Yerablur to pay tribute to the victims of the tragedy of Sumgait.
