Nobel Prize winners Tim Hunt (Great Britain) and Martin Chalfie (U.S.) delivered public lectures in Armenia on Sunday. The lectures were organized by the Youth Foundation of Armenia and Young Biologists Association NGO in collaboration with the State Committee of Science of the RA Ministry of Science and Education, Tufenkian Foundation and Matenadaran.

The event brought together about 180 young Armenian scientists and students specializing in biomedicine, molecular biology, and related areas.

Tim Hunt's lecture was devoted to cancer, whereas Martin Chalfie reflected on the green fluorescent protein. Mr Hunt said that some types of cancer have disappeared during the past century, for example, stomach cancer has become rare. Cases of lung cancer have increased instead which is largely caused by smoking.

After the lectures the scientists answered the questions of attendees.

On the sidelines of the Young Scientists' Support Program, which is implemented under the auspices of the President of Armenia, the Nobel Prize winners also attended a roundtable discussion during which about thirty young scientists discussed a wide range of issues with Tim Hunt and Martin Chalfie.

Tim Hunt and Martin Chalfie said they are impressed by their visit to Armenia and they see a great potential in the country's young scientists.
