Face of poverty: Many still live in miserable conditions in Gyumri “domiks”

Twenty six years after the devastating earthquake of 1988, the ‘domik’ districts continue to exist in various parts of Armenia’s Gyumri city. Many residents still live in wagon-like tin shelters since the 1988 earthquake that ravaged the area. Gyumri-based Shirak Centre NGO continues visiting these families who live in metal shacks and use wood, plastic bottles, old clothes, boxes, or rubber wheels in order to heat their shelters. Even our daily visits and studies cannot form a complete picture of the miserable condition and its direct consequences reigning in the domiks, says the NGO. The photos only show part of this misery. The representatives of the NGO again gave fuel and clothing to several families which were provided by Swedish Armenian Society, Shirak in Stockholm.
