We were given elite litter instead of elite wheat, say farmers (video)
We were given elite litter instead of elite wheat, said farmers who were staging a protest outside the government building in Yerevan on July 17. The farmers, who had arrived in the Armenian capital from Ararat, Armavir and Gegharkunik regions, were complaining of the elite Russian wheat seeds that they purchased in 2011. The peasants say they paid 750 drams for the wheat but have collected only 25-30% of the crop due to poor yields. They claim that a lien is placed on their property and they are unable to make deals. According to an initial agreement the farmers were allowed to pay the money for the purchase after the sale of the crop. Now the desperate farmers ask the prime minister to help solve the problem or give them an opportunity to leave the country. A group of protesters are now holding a meeting with Minister of Agriculture Sergo Karapetyan.
