The Republican Party of Armenia (HHK) is against convening parliamentary hearings on emigration because the 200 000 people that have left the country in the past five years, took the migration route because of the HHK, says a senior representative of the opposition Armenian National Congress (HAK). “Emigration has become a continuing trend. Though the data for 2013 is not available yet, it is estimated that over 40000 people left Armenia last year,” says Levon Zurabyan. “We are losing our county, according to the official statistics.” The HAK lawmaker prefers not to speak about the non-official data on emigration: Serzh Sargsyan urged everyone to rely on official reports. “People in Armenia have lost the sense of perspective. This is the biggest crime that the Republicans have committed against our country.”   The opposition lawmaker says the reasons for migration are not only social; people could overcome difficulties if they saw future in their homeland. “Unfortunately, there is no future here because an oligarch’s bodyguard can freely and openly beat a child for nothing. People are running away because they know that corruption is widespread, because they know that there is no justice, courts are corrupt,” said Mr Zurabyan. “We are aware of all these reasons,” says Vahran Baghdasaryan, Head of the HHK faction in parliament. He is not afraid of parliamentary hearings; he just wants others to speak about emigration. “When you talk to ordinary people, there is a great philosophy in it,” he said. The MP suggests that special groups visit regions to study the reasons for migration on the spot and to hear people’s complaints and concerns. He is doubtful that parliamentary hearings will be productive.
