Last week, Turkish parliament authorised the government to carry out cross-border military operations in Iraq and Syria to fight the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) and other armed groups. Thursday's vote also allows foreign soldiers to be stationed in Turkey and to use its military bases for the same purposes with no limit on the troop numbers. Turkologist Gevorg Petrosyan says it is not strange that our neighbouring country, Turkey, allows its arms forces to carry out military operations outside its borders. “The most interesting is that Turkey allowed foreign forces to use its military bases and its territory against the same forces,” he says. The regional developments cannot bypass Armenia, says Hayk Kocharyan, an expert in Arabic studies. “The situation is very complicated in the region. The clashes are happening at a distance of 700-800 km, and the situation can be dangerous for Armenia,” he said. Asked whether the formation of a Kurdish state is realistic against the background of the current events, the expert said, “The factor of Kurds in the relations between Turkey and the Islamic state is very important. The existence of the Islamic state stems from the interests of Turkey. Today, Turkey is guided by the ‘divide and conquer’ strategy (also known as ‘divide and rule’ strategy) and Turkey will benefit if Kurds and Islamists confront and weaken,” the Turkologist said adding that the independence of  Kurdish state is not realistic in the current situation.
