Can freedom of speech be limited in Armenia by joining the EEU? Freedom of speech defense committee President Ashot Melikyan says, “When the EEU membership process started, it was said that it would have only economic-financial inclination, but we note that there is also political influence. And if it exists, there is also threat that there may be pressure on freedom of speech and work of media.” It is not excluded that Google web search engine and social websites Facebook and Twitter may be blocked since January 1. Information security specialist Samvel Martirosyan’s predictions are optimistic, “There aren’t such powers in Russia, which will let it, even if those companies want to transfer their servers. So it is said that it must be postponed.” And in the worst case, won’t Armenia suffer from it, “There is no logic in it, no one imagines how it can be. If Google wanted to come to Armenia with our servers, we couldn’t. And just closing Google is simply schizophrenia.” The prohibition of some websites is regress for Russia, is sure Ashot Melikyan, “If that union must take us into stone age, I think we don’t need it, may be new fight will be needed as in 1988, as we were leaving the Soviet Union.” There will be no pressure and prohibition from Russia. All the concerns are baseless, NA President Galust Sahakyan is sure, “Such problems are solved in European institutions but not in Russia. We have economic relations with the EEU and we are integrated to Europe with democratic values.”
