Police in Armenia have switched to “an enhanced service” and strengthened their vigilance on streets ahead of New Year celebrations. “We shall do everything to reduce the number of road accidents and traffic jams in order not to spoil festive moods of citizens. Drunk drivers will be taken out of the vehicle and passengers will be safely taken to their destinations by the police,” Chief of the Traffic Police's Road and Patrol Service, Colonel Norik Sargsyan, said on Friday. In reply to A1+ whether the police ‘forgive’ drunk drivers on ordinary days, Mr Sargsyan said, “Of course, we punish them otherwise we would be unable to detect about 5000 drunk drivers in one year.” Police today urged all motorists to be vigilant in the coming days. “Six people were killed and 128 injured in 87 accidents that occurred in the country from January 1 to 10, 2015. Twenty-four of them involved drivers under the influence of alcohol. It is better to spoil people’s mood by protocols than by road accidents,” Mr Sargsyan said.
