To throw the old shoes away or to send them to Helena? During non-working hours activist Helena Melkonyan gives new life to the old shoes.
So far there has been no order of illustrating old shoes. But, to her surprise, there are many people willing to have colorful sneakers. Helena took up this job together with her sister three months ago by illustrating the first sneakers with the drawings of her beloved hero- the Little Prince.
She recalls her first customer, Asya, who saw the photo on ‘Tsir Katin’ (Milky Way) Facebook page and ordered it. The brand was named after this galaxy not by chance. It’s a part of her childhood dream, she says by recalling that she wanted to become an astronaut.
It is early to speak about profit. The income hardly covers the amount spent on paints and shoes. A pair of shoes costs AMD 7500. But she doesn’t lose hope and even wants her job to infect others.
Illustration is a way of self-expression for Helena. But has it replaced the civic struggle?
